modern moments in everyday building

White Boxes. NYC. 2011-2012

A vernacular of sorts—especially in Manhattan—these whitewashed vacant tenant spaces have an eerie presence illuminated at night with nothing to sell except the space itself.  The cold white fluorescent light that floods the sidewalk allows the passerby to see with great depth and clarity all the details of the space.  Robust concrete structure is typically exposed, and walls, ceilings, and floors are stripped down to their raw, base building, materials.

In a city of "white box" art galleries, these spaces turn into the art themselves.
